Today's college football results and games include major victories for Illinois, Northwestern, and Vanderbilt in Week 0.
A review of Week 0's events as the 2022 college football season begins.
Week 0 of the college football season is occasionally just a warm-up for the remaining games, but Saturday's games got off to a fast start. As the 2022 season began, a few unexpected games came down to the wire and a few individual performances challenged our preconceptions.
Northwestern pulled off the year's first surprise, defeating Nebraska 31-28 in Dublin, Ireland, thanks to an outstanding effort from their offensive line that resulted in 214 yards of rushing. The lone significant upset of the day was achieved by the Wildcats, but fellow underdogs Austin Peay, Florida A&M, and UConn all gave their opponents a scare.
The Rattlers destroyed North Carolina's pass defence but were unable to keep up with a thin roster in a 56-24 loss, and Huskies star running back Nathan Carter had 190 yards rushing in a closer-than-expected 31-20 loss to defending Mountain West champions Utah State. The Governors had a real chance to pull off the first FCS-over-FBS upset of 2022 before losing to Western Kentucky 38-27.
On paper, not every oddly matched game was competitive, though. Florida State defeated Duquesne 47-7 behind three 100-yard rushers, while Illinois thrashed Wyoming 38-6.
